Cowgirls blank HBU 2-0 to get back on winning track

HOUSTON - Two goals in a four minute span in the first 17 minutes of the game was enough to power McNeese to a 2-0 Southland Conference soccer win over HBU here Friday night. 

The win snapped a three-game losing streak by the Cowgirls who improve to 10-6-0 overall and 6-3-0 in league play. HBU fell to 2-14-0 and 1-8-0 in the league. The victory also secure the third-straight, double-digit wins season for McNeese. And with Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi losing on Friday, the Cowgirls jump from seventh to fifth place in the league standings.

FIRST HALF
The Pokes entered halftime leading 2-0 after a pair of goals from Havana Johnson and Rachel Palet. McNeese shot the ball a total of 10 times and was able to put eight of them on frame.

13' – In the thirteenth minute Palet gave the Pokes a 1-0 lead as she found the back of the net for the first time this season. Palet placed the ball just over the keepers reach from about 25 yard out.

17' – Four minutes later Johnson would add to the lead as she scored her sixth goal of the season. Anna Watson would earn her third assist of the season on her cross into Johnson.

SECOND HALF
McNeese would remain dominate in the second half to eventually shutout the Huskies. The Cowgirl defense held HBU to five shots, only two of which were on goal.

MATCH NOTES
• The Pokes were led by Havana Johnson and Rachel Palet who each had three shots and a goal in Friday night's contest.
• Sophomore Gabrielle Christy picked up four saves as she started in goal and made her third straight appearance.
• McNeese snapped its three-game skid and will look to win its second straight on Sunday afternoon at Texas A&M-CC.
