NACOGDOCHES – McNeese scored 20 fourth quarter points while gaining 194 of its 408 total offensive yards in the game as the Cowboys ran away with a 33-10 Southland Conference win over Stephen F. Austin here Saturday.
The win was the second straight for the Cowboys, the first winning streak of the season, as they move to over .500 for the season at 5-4 while evening their league record to 3-3. SFA fell to 1-7 and 1-4.
Justin Pratt rushed for 133 yards on 21 carries while
Cody Orgeron threw for 162 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 73 yards and a score. His 30-yard burst up the middle with 11:57 to play put the Cowboys up 20-10.
The minutes later, he connected with
Cyron Sutton, who caught five passes for 55 yards with two scores, for a 33-yard catch and run score to make it 26-10.
Pratt closed out the scoring with a 21-yard run with 2:16 to play to make it 33-10.
Defensively, McNeese held the Lumberjacks to 254 total yards – 79 rushing and 175 passing and also intercepted a pass, that coming from
Darion Dunn.
For the second straight game, McNeese dominated the fourth quarter by controlling the ball for 9:30 and converting 5 of 6 on third downs.
The Lumberjacks struck first on an 8-yard catch and run by Josh McGowan to make it 7-0 with 10:34 to play in the first quarter.
The Cowboys threatened later in the period when Orgeron connected with
Trevor Begue for 40 yards to get the ball down to the 2-yard line, but SFA's defense held tough and forced McNeese to kick a 22-yard field goal by
Bailey Raborn with 2:16 to play in the first and making it a 7-3 game.
McNeese took the lead late in the second quarter when Orgeron found Sutton on a 3-yard lob to make it 10-7 heading into the break.
The Cowboys increased the lead to 13-7 after a 39-yard Raborn field goal with 6:13 to play in the third quarter, then with 18 seconds to play in the period, Storm Ruiz booted a 40-yard field goal for SFA to cut the McNeese lead to 13-10.
McNeese took over in the fourth quarter with 20 points – a 30-yard run by Orgeron, a 33-yard catch and run by Sutton from Orgeron, and a 21-yard run by Pratt, to put the game away at 26-10.
