LAKE CHARLES – Dru Kuxhausen's school record 10 three-pointers and a career-high 32 points and a 15-0 run to start the game ignited McNeese to a 109-67 blowout win over Paul Quinn in the final non-conference game of the season at the McNeese H&HP Arena on Wednesday night.
Kuxhausen, who sank a school record seven threes in the first half on 7 of 11 shooting, started slow in the second half at just two long balls away from matching the 10-year old record of nine that was set by Diego Kapelan against Northwestern State on Feb. 18, 2009.
After missing his first four long attempts of the second half, the junior guard caught fire by hitting three straight in a span of 1:24 late in the game with the record breaker coming at the 1:55 mark to put McNeese up 107-60. He ended the night hitting 10 of 18 from behind the arc and 11 of 19 overall.
The win was the third straight for the Cowboys as they improve to 5-6 on the season. It also kept McNeese unbeaten at home, now at 5-0, as it prepares for Saturday's Southland Conference opening showdown against Stephen F. Austin at 3 p.m. in the arena.
"I just want to thank our fans for coming out," said head coach
Heath Schroyer who has coached the Cowboys to their first three-game winning streak in four years. "We need all of Cowboy Nation to be in the arena on Saturday. Take a break from your Christmas shopping and come on out."
McNeese had four players finish in double-digit scoring along with Kuxhausen.
A.J. Lawson scored 19 points and dished out a career-high 10 assists to complete a double-double.
Roydell Brown also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards and
Sam Baker connected for 18 points behind 6 of 10 shooting from behind the arc.
The Cowboys were without leading scorer and rebounder Sha'Markus Kennedy who was battling the flu.
McNeese connected on 60.3 percent of its shots (41 of 68) and was 19 of 35 for 54 percent from three-point range.
The Cowboys led 56-27 at the half then outscored Paul Quinn (2-13) by a 53-40 margin in the second half en route to their fourth 100-point game of the season, all at home.
Paul Quinn was led by a 19-point outing by Mateo Escheik and 11 from Chris Scaife.
