T&F: Smith Breaks 200m School Record; Gilroy Grabs Silver at LSU

LAKE CHARLES - McNeese men's track and field sprinter Tyler Smith broke the McNeese indoor 200-meter record on Friday at the Meyo Invitational with a time of 21.25. Smith's record-breaking performance landed him first place in the event.

Smith's record time broke the mark of 21.58 set by Tyler Syrie last February at the same Meyo Invitational.

In Baton Rouge, McNeese women's long-distance runner Ciara Gilroy set a new PR in the 800-meter with a time of 2:22.58 to land her a second-place finish at the LSU Bayou Bengal Invite.

For the Cowboys, Smith is also currently tied for the lead after the 60m preliminaries with a time of 6.80.

Kobe Nevills and Ethan Rapp set PRs in the 200-meters with times of 22.49 and 22.68, respectively.

Senior jumper Lentz Similien finished fourth in the triple-jump with a PR mark of 48-9.50.

For the Cowgirls, junior sprinter Aleyah Donald snagged third-place in the 200-meters with a PR of 24.47. Donald currently holds the second fastest time in the 60m with a PR of 7.51 after the preliminary round.

In the long jump, Grace McKenzie finished third overall with a leap of 18-11.25.

The Meyo Invitational will continue tomorrow with the women's triple jump and shot put at 10:30 a.m. and come to a close after the men's 4x400-meter relay at 4:15 p.m.

LSU Bayou Bengal

Eleven McNeese athletes set PRs in their respective events on Friday at the LSU Bayou Bengal Invite. Gilroy's second-place finish was the top finish on the day for McNeese.

On the women's side, Brentney Carroll (9.00), Shaelyn Hines (9.08), and Rachel Woods (9.07) all set PRs in the 60m hurdles, Carroll and Hines in the finals and Woods in preliminaries. The trio would go on to finish the event in 6th, 7th, and 8th place, respectively.

Freshman Carli McDonald would improve on her 60m time and clock an 8.09 in the preliminary round and go on to finish 7th in the long jump with a distance of 17-6.

Along with Gilroy, sophomore Alissa Lander also set a PR in the 800-meter. Lander finished 16th on the day with a time of 2:35.03.

For the men, freshman hurdler Lucas Voigt finished third in the 60m hurdles with a PR of 8.47. Blake Grace would also set his PR in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.42 in the preliminaries, and would finish fifth overall in the event.

Pole vaulter Brendan Ford would reach his highest height yet with a 15-1.75, good for a sixth-place finish.

Junior Gared Brown would run a PR 6.99 in the 60m preliminaries, and Morgan Frederick would set a PR in the 800-meter with a time of 2:08.52.
