Box Score LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese women's tennis team opened up home play on Friday with a 7-0 sweep of Prairie View A&M.
The Cowgirls (2-4) only dropped one set all day to the Lady Panthers (0-7).
In doubles action, PVAMU scored its only set win early when Timara Maxwell and Jessica Lackey defeated the Cowgirl duo or
Dalia Ahmed and
Giovanna Fioretti 6-0 to give the Lady Panthers an early lead for the doubles point.
At doubles No. 3, McNeese's
Charlotte Ziegler and
Stella Carra defeated Jimena Duran-Castellanos and Claudia Medina 6-4 to tie set victories at one apiece in doubles play.
Finishing off doubles play, Cowgirls
Charoline Erlandsson and
Carlotta Romito defeated their Prairie View counterparts of Mahogani Green and Neharika Rama 6-4 to secure the doubles point for McNeese heading into singles play.
The Cowgirls would come out fiercely in singles action and never let up, sweeping the Lady Panthers on all six courts.
At singles No. 2, ITA #119 Erlandsson would make quick work of Castellanos and defeat her by a score of 6-1 in consecutive sets.
Next to finish, McNeese's
Sofia San Jose Moreno would take down Lackey by a score of 6-1, 6-1.
At singles No. 3,
Marija Mastilovic would secure the team victory for the Cowgirls with a 6-1, 6-2 sweep of Maxwell.
At singles No. 6, freshman Ahmed would go on to secure the point with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Medina.
Cowgirl freshman Romito would finish next at singles No. 4. The Cowgirl would win set number one over Aranguiz 6-2. In the second set of the match Aranguiz would retire while down 2-1, securing the match for Romito.
Last to finish on the day, McNeese's Fioretti would sweep Rama 6-2, 6-3 to secure the first sweep of the season for the Cowgirls.
"Overall I am satisfied with how the team handled today's match," said McNeese head coach Giorgia Pozzan. "The conditions were tough due to the weather and our slow start in doubles. As soon as we got over our nerves, however, we never looked back and got our first home win. I also want to thank everyone who came out to support, that definitely helped our team: they love playing in front of a crowd."
The Cowgirls will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to Mississippi to take on Alcorn State.
