SB: Cowgirls Split Games At Cowgirl Classic Saturday

LAKE CHARLES—McNeese softball split its games on day three of the Cowgirl Classic here Saturday picking up a 7-2 win over Campbell before falling 6-1 to Lipscomb. McNeese and Lipscomb will square off again at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday in the final game of the tournament. Campbell and Arkansas will play at 9 a.m. in the only other game Sunday.
 
McNeese picked up 11 hits against the Camels and was led with two apiece from three different players. Cory McCrary was one of the players with two hits with of her hits being a double. McCrary was 2 for 3 at the plate with three RBI. Brenique Wright collected the other extra base hit (double) for the Cowgirls.
 
Sophomore Amber Coons picked up her first win of the season and freshman Saleen Flores picked up her first save. Coons gave up one earned run in five innings and struck out five.
 
In the nightcap, the Cowgirls stranded nine baserunners including two each in the second and fifth innings and three in the seventh.
 
The Cowgirls were held to three hits including one extra base hit from a triple from Toni Perrin. Sophomore Caroline Settle took the loss (0-2) after allowing five earned runs on five hits in three innings. Saleen Flores gave up one run on one hit in four innings of relief.
 
 
Game 1: McNeese 7, Campbell 2
 
1st Inning- Cowgirls score two runs on back-to-back doubles by Cory McCrary and Brenique Wright for a 2-0 lead
 
2nd Inning-  Holmes led the inning off with a single and later scored on a throw down to second on an attempt to get McClain out stealing.
 
3rd Inning- Boudreaux lead the inning off with a single, steals second and scores on a RBI single to centerfield by Toni Perrin for a 4-0 lead
 
5th Inning- Amber Coons got out of a bases loaded jam by getting Claudia Ware to pop out to shortstop to end the threat.
 
McNeese took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the inning when Cory McCrary scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Megan Holmes
 
6th Inning- Cowgirls extend their lead with two more runs on a two RBI single by McCrary
 
7th- The Camels mustered another run in the top of the inning on a RBI double by Christa Hall but Cowgirl reliever Saleen Flores struck out Bri Bryant to end the game.
 
Sophomore Amber Coons picked up her first win of the season to improve to 1-0. Coons hurled 5.0 innings, gave up four hits and struck out five.
 
Flores gave up two hits and struck out three in the final two innings.
 
 
Game 2 McNeese 1, Lipscomb 6
 
2nd Inning- The Bisons scored four runs on two hits including a two RBI double and two walks. Lipscomb also scored two runs on a squeeze bunt and a fielder's choice.
 
McNeese got on the board in the bottom of the inning when Toni Perrin tripled all the way to the right field wall and came home on a single by Aubree Turbeville. The Cowgirls weren't able to push any more runs across in the inning after leaving the bases loaded with one out.
 
4th- Lipscomb extended its lead 5-1 following a leadoff solo homerun over the left field wall by Hannah DeVault. After giving up a double to left center, Cowgirl starter Caroline Settle was replaced by freshman Saleen Flores.
 
5th- McNeese leaves runners stranded on first and second with a pop out to second base by Boudreaux and a foul out to third by McCrary.
 
7th- Lipscomb scores another run with two outs in the top of the seventh when Graysen Gladden drew a two out walk, went to third on an error and scored when Peyton Ward was be caught in a run down between first and second base.
 
McNeese missed another chance to score some runs in the bottom of the seventh inning by leaving the bases loaded after pinch hitter Taylor Edwards led the bottom of the inning with a single through the right side. After a pop out, Justyce McClain drew a walk. After another out both players advanced a base then Demi Boudreaux loaded the bases with another walk. McCrary's ground out to second base ended the game.
