WTEN: Cowgirls Drop Final Road Match to UCA

| By:
Box Score CONWAY, Arkansas – The McNeese women's tennis team closed out its five-game road stretch on Sunday with a 6-1 loss to Central Arkansas.

The Cowgirls (7-8, 2-4 SLC) came out slow in doubles and could not find their groove as the Sugar Bears (13-6, 5-1 SLC) kept up their pace.

In doubles action, UCA would take and early lead for the doubles point as McNeese's Charoline Erlandsson and Sofia San Jose Moreno would fall to Chunxi Xin and Marli Van Heerdan 6-0.

At doubles No. 2, the Cowgirl duo of Stella Carra and Marija Mastilovic would fall to Yada Vasupongchai and Mei Ishimura 6-2, securing the doubles point for UCA.

McNeese's Dalia Ahmed and Giovanna Fioretti would have their match against Qili Ma and Fuka Nonoyama go unfinished at doubles No. 3.

In singles action, UCA would keep up its pace while McNeese could not find an answer.

At singles No. 4, Moreno would be swept by Heerdan 6-0, 6-2 to give UCA a 2-0 lead on the day.

McNeese's Mastilovic would pick up the Cowgirls only point of the day at singles No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-3 sweep of Ishimura.

At singles No. 6, McNeese freshman Ahmed would be the second Cowgirl to fall in straight sets on the day with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Ma.

Xin would secure the team victory for the Sugar Bears at singles No. 1 with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Fioretti.

At singles No. 2, Erlandsson would go on to take the first set from Nonoyama 6-4 before dropping the next two sets by a score of 6-3 for Erlandsson's first singles loss of the season.

Finishing last on the day, McNeese's Carlotta Romito would be the final Cowgirl to fall in straight sets to their UCA counterpart in a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Vasupongchai.

"Today was not a good day for us," said McNeese head coach Giorgia Pozzan. "We started slow in doubles and before we knew it we had lost the point. We definitely regrouped well enough in singles, winning first sets on courts 2 and 3. However, we couldn't keep the lead and could not adjust to UCA's game plan. We need to use this loss to fire us up even more for the upcoming matches. "

The Cowgirls have been on the road for nearly a month straight and will return home for their upcoming matches against Nicholls and New Orleans on April 5 and 7, respectively. The Cowgirls will then close out the season the following weekend as Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State visit Lake Charles.
