Box Score LAKE CHARLES- Junior midfielder Anna Watson scored two of McNeese's four goals to help lead the Cowgirls to a 4-1 season opening win over Southern at Cowgirl Field Friday night in women's soccer action.
Two other Pokes were able to find the back of the net - Mariah Ruelas and Keely Morrow.Â
True freshman goalkeeper Kelly Hines picked up the win in the net in her first collegiate action after filling in for returning goalkeeper Emma Roccaforte. Two other returning starter, Havanna Johnson and Rachel Palet, also missed the contest.
McNeese will return to Cowgirl Field on Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock when it hosts Tulsa.Â
NOTES:
• McNeese outshot Southern 32-2 and a 19-1 shots on goal advantage.
• Ruelas and Morrow each added an assist to go along with their goals.
• The Cowgirls held an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
GOAL REVIEW
The first goal came in the 18th minute by Ruelas when she placed the ball just over the keeper's head. Nine minutes later, Watson scored her first goal of the season on a set piece right outside the box. Morrow earned her goal on a penalty kick in the 10th minute of the second half to make it 3-0. The last goal was Watson's second of the night that came from a header on a corner kick from Ruelas.
The Jaguars found their only goal of the night in the 56th minute from freshman defender Cordney Armstrong.
