LAKE CHARLES- McNeese sophomore forward Delana Friesen continued to build her reputation on Friday when her second goal of the second late in the game lifted the Cowgirls to a 2-0 win over Jackson State in women's soccer action.
The win kept the Cowgirls (3-3) unbeaten at home on the season at 3-0 while outscoring their opponents by a 9-1 margin.
"Last year I only had one assist, but it feels really good to impact other aspects of the game on the field," said Friesen. "It's really awesome to hear coach say that he's proud of me but I just like to work hard and work for my team."
Jackson State fell to 0-6 on the year after the loss.
Both teams were scoreless throughout the first half despite the Cowgirls getting off eight shots to JSU's zero.Â
In the second half, the Pokes came out fast and strong which led to them capitalizing on their opportunities. Anna Watson found the back of the net in the 58th minute of play to give the Cowgirls the lead at 1-0. Watson's goal was her fifth on the season and was assisted by Mariah Ruelas, which was her second of the year.
The 84th minute is when Friesen would extend the lead for the Pokes. Friesen was able to find the side netting on a ball off the foot from just outside the box. The goal was Friesen's second of the year (second career goal) and was assisted by Havana Johnson, her first of the season.
McNeese will travel to Texas State to face the bobcats on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the final tune-up game before opening up Southland Conference play next Friday at home against Southeastern Louisiana.
NOTES:
• Sophomore goalkeeper Gabrielle Christy picked up her first win in the net for the 2019 season.
• Watson leads the team in goals scored, scoring her fifth in tonight's action.
• McNeese remained undefeated at home for their first seven home games in 2018.
QUOTING HEAD COACH DREW FITZGERALD
"It was a disappointing first half. I felt like Jackson State came to play and we didn't. However, the second was good. A lot of our players who don't usually get the chance to start a half stepped up and played well. Dee (Delana Friesen) has been working hard and she is going to score some goals for us this year. She can strike the heck out of a ball."
