BATON ROUGE, La. - For the third consecutive week and fourth time this season, McNeese State University's Sha'markus Kennedy has been named the men's college basketball Player-of-the-Week by the Louisiana Sports Writer's Association. Kennedy was selected by panel of voters from the list of nominees for his play during the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 2020.
Kennedy was the LSWA Player-of-the-Week during the weeks of Dec. 9-15, 2019, Jan. 13-19 (Co-Player-of-the-Week with LSU's Javonte Smart), Jan. 20-26, 2020, and this past week. It's also the fourth consecutive week that a McNeese Cowboy has been honored.
During the week, Kennedy averaged 17.5 points and 17.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game.
The Tuscaloosa, Ala. native, became the first player in the state to grab 20 rebounds in a game when he pulled down 20 in McNeese's 80-74 overtime win over Nicholls on Jan. 29. In the game, Kennedy also scored 16 points as he went 7-of-14 from the floor and 2-for-5 from the free throw line to register his eighth double-double of the season.
In McNeese's 96-91 loss to Lamar on Feb. 1, Kennedy scored 19 points and had 14 rebounds to register his ninth double-double. He also had three blocked shots in the game.
Kennedy ranks third in the Southland Conference in scoring with an 18.0 points per game average. He sits atop the SLC in rebounding with a 10.2 per game average. Kennedy also ranks first in the SLC in field goal percentage connecting on .677 (151-223) percent of his shots.Â
Before the loss to Lamar, the senior forward had helped lead McNeese to seven straight SLC wins. The Cowboys are now 12-10 overall and 7-4 in SLC play.
