DALLAS – McNeese dropped a double-header in women's tennis action against SMU, falling by 7-0 scores in both matches but the Cowgirls showed much improvement from the first match to the second.
 
"We did not show up in the first match. We got completely overwhelmed by SMU's energy and couldn't turn it around," said head coach Giorgia Pozzan. "However, things were completely different in the second match. We showed up ready to fight and got very close to winning the doubles point. We continued to step up during singles but SMU was just too goody today. Time to get back to work and get ready for Lamar next Monday."
 
SMU (4-1) took little time in beating McNeese (0-4) in the day's first match, taking the doubles point after 6-0 wins in the No. 2 and 3 matchups.
 
Sofia San Jose Moreno made it a closer match in the No. 3 singles when after dropping the first set 6-1, she bounced back to win the second set by a 6-4 score.
 
In the second match, SMU won the doubles point but the Cowgirls made the Mustangs work for it.
 
The team of Matilde Mulatero and Natalia Ballo made it a close match before falling 6-4. In the No. 1 doubles, Carlotta Romito and Hanna Blinouskaya trailed 4-2 before the match was called due to the Mustangs taking the point after winning the No. 2 matchup by a 6-1 score.
 
In singles action, Luna Jokanovic battled SMU's Kiana Graham in the No. 5 pairing, winning the first set 7-5 before dropping the next two sets.
 
San Jose Moreno put up a good fight in the No. 2 matchup against Chandler Carter before falling 6-4, 6-2.
 
The Cowgirls will be out of action next week before facing off against Lamar in Beaumont on Feb. 1 in a non-conference tilt.
