LAKE CHARLES- Timely scoring made the difference as the McNeese Cowgirls (10-4-2, 7-2-1) gutted out a 3-2 win over the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi (4-9-2, 2-5-2) Sunday at Cowgirl Field.
The Cowgirls struck early as the Pokes were rewarded with a penalty kick due to TAMCC's hand-ball one minute into the match, defender Morgan Schooley scored her first career goal as she put a laser past the Islander's goal keeper. The Cowgirls kept applying pressure as Kelsey Crosby and Abbi Morrell each had three shots in the first 15 minutes.
Havana Johnson got in on the fun as Rachel Young's through ball met Johnson as she beat her defender to score one on one against the goalie. Crosby also recorded an assist on the goal. The Cowgirls outshot the Islanders 8-0 in the first half and led 2-0 at the half.
True freshman goalie Jackie Kelly was able to hold strong as Texas A&M - CC would not score until the 68th minute as Samantha Palomino was able to sneak a ball to the lower right corner of the net. With momentum waning, Magalie Depot put her skillset on display as she carved up the Islander's defense and scored with her left foot in the 82nd minute. The Islanders would answer that goal a minute later via Reaghan Lang's penalty kick. The Cowgirls would then use timely stops on defense to maintain the lead til the clock hit 0:00.
McNeese Head Coach Drew Fitzgerald:
"I think there was a little more grit in us today, obviously we got off to a good start which was helpful. We still need to figure out how to close out a game properly, I was a little disappointed with that but given where we are in the season with injuries and whatnot any win is a huge win and we gutted it out in the end. Corpus gave us all kinds of problems at the end but good job to use for finding a way to win, would just like it to be a bit more cleaner next time."
