HAMMOND- The McNeese Cowgirls played to a 1-1 draw against Southeastern after 110 minutes Friday evening (Oct. 8) at Strawberry Stadium.
Tactically speaking, the Cowgirls and Lady Lions came out of the gate with an evident plan, both teams wanting to push the pace vertically. The teams battled evenly the entire match with neither team giving an inch for separation on either end. The two total goals were no surprise as these two teams rank towards the top of the conference in terms of the least amount of goals given up as two highly skilled defenses dictated the match.
Forward Rachel Young played 86 minutes off the bench scoring the lone goal for the Cowgirls. Defender Morgan Schooley was all over the field on the defensive end as she seemingly intercepted every ball in her path. Midfielder Abbi Morrell frequently played both sides of the pitch exerting much effort.
Scoring Plays
Southeastern struck first the 27th minute, Maycie Massingill was all alone in front of the Cowgirl net as Kelly's lunging attempt to cut Massingill off was just late.
In the 53rd minute, Kiana Kukaua hit Rachel Young in stride who was alone on the break. Young connected on a left-footed shot that found the back right post to tie the match at one.
McNeese Head Coach Drew Fitzgerald:
"I thought both teams played well and had moments of control. They (Southeastern) had a nice game plan and in overtime really seized the match so I thought we did well to hang on and secure the point on the road. It's always a battle when we play Southeastern and tonight was no different. Also, Kiana Kukaua had a heck of a night as she was a rock for us. She was good in distribution and won a ton of balls tonight."
