BERKELEY, Ca.— McNeese women's basketball got off to a cold start and never recovered here Saturday in its 102-60 loss at California. The Cowgirls will continue its West Coast trip at Oregon Monday night.
Desirae Hansen was the only Cowgirl to score in double figures, ending the game with 16 points and a team high eight rebounds. Hansen ended the game 5 of 11 from the field with all five field goals coming from three-point range and was one of two from the free throw line.
Kyla Hamilton came off the bench to score nine points and
Kaili Chamberlin and
Divine Tanks were credited with seven boards apiece.
McNeese (3-6) couldn't buy a bucket in the opening quarter, starting the game 0-16 from the field, while Cal on the other hand scored the first 10 points of the game. The Cowgirls scored their first two points of the game from two free throws, one apiece from
Lana Skripkina and one from
Clara Rosini before
Divine Tanks scored the Cowgirls first field goal of the game with 1:21 left in the first quarter. A layup by
Kyla Hamilton and a three-pointer by Rosini closed out the first quarter with McNeese trailing 22-9.
The Cowgirls' shooting slump continued in the second quarter as they were outscored 26-11 and trailed 48-20 at the half. McNeese connected on three field goals, two of which were from behind the arc from
Desirae Hansen.
Cowgirls shot 15 percent from the field in the first half (6-39) while Cal shot 51 percent from the field (20-39) and scored 32 of their points in the paint. McNeese shot 63 percent from the free throw line, making 5 of 8 attempts. The Cowgirls were credited with 14 offensive rebounds.
Cal (7-2) continued to build on its lead in the second half and the Cowgirls continued to struggle from the field. Despite a height advantage by Cal, the Bears outrebounded the Cowgirls 46-45 but the Bears took advantage of the paint and ended the game scoring 62 points in the paint and got 57 points from its bench.
For the game, McNeese shot 28 percent from the field, 29 percent from three-point range and 59 percent from the free throw line. Cal ended the game shooting 54 percent from the field, 32 percent from the arc, and 88 percent from the free throw line.
Cal placed four players in double figures with Jayda Curry and Dalayah Daniels leading all players with 17 points apiece. Ugonne Onyiah came off the bench to score record a double double (16 points, 10 reb.) and Evelien Lutje Schipholt added 12.
McNeese will conclude its West Coast road trip at Oregon Monday.
