LAKE CHARLES – The McNeese Cowboy basketball team picked up a huge win on the road at Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday night, a victory that leaped the Cowboys into the No. 8 spot for the postseason tournament with three games remaining, all at home.
McNeese will play the first of those three on Saturday night at 7:30 against HBU. The game will broadcast live on the McNeese Radio Network (Magic 92.1 FM and mymagiclc.com) while a video stream will also be available for a small fee on the McNeese Athletics website.
Saturday's game will be the first at home for the Cowboys since a Jan. 20 contest against Southeastern Louisiana.
"I'm proud of our guys for battling with everything they've been through," said head coach
Heath Schroyer. "That was a really big win for us over a good Southeastern team."
The Cowboys (9-11, 3-8 SLC) have 11 total points to rank them eighth in the league standings. Due to so many games being canceled because of the COVID pandemic, the Southland Conference has gone to a point system to determine the league standings.
A win is worth three points, a loss is zero, and a game that will not be able to be made up will count as one point. And with Stephen F. Austin having decided to take its postseason ban this year, the Cowboys are in eighth place. HBU, however, will come into Saturday night's game right behind the Cowboys with 10 points.
The Cowboys will host Nicholls at 6:30 on Thursday night and will wrap up regular season play versus Lamar next Saturday at 4. The game against Nicholls was moved from its original day of Wednesday due to the LHSAA girls semifinals being played at Burton Coliseum Monday through Wednesday.
McNeese's KeyShawn Feazell continues to lead the team in both scoring (14.2 ppg) and rebounding (10.5 rpg) while
Dru Kuxhausen is averaging 12.2 points,
A.J. Lawson at 12.1 and
Carlos Rosario with an 11.5 average.
The Huskies (4-15, 3-8) have two players averaging double-figures on the season – Pedro Castro with a 14.0 scoring average and Za-Ontay Boothman at 11.0.
The Cowboys beat the Huskies 74-71 back on Jan. 23 in Houston in the first of what had become six straight road games for the Cowboys.
