It's been 14 months since McNeese first year head volleyball coach
Kristee Porter was hired and come Thursday, Porter will make her McNeese debut when the Cowgirls are set to host Southeastern Louisiana (2-1, 0-0 SLC) at 6 p.m. in both teams Southland Conference opener.
Â
Needless to say, it's been a rough and challenging 14 months for both Porter and her 2021 spring Cowgirl squad. The COVID-19 Pandemic pushed the fall season back to this spring and Hurricanes Laura and Delta in August displaced the team and damaged its home court (H&HP Arena), moving all home matches to SP Arnett Middle School in Westlake.
Â
Due to limited seating and COVID guidelines, capacity will be capped at 25 percent. Only those individuals on the pass list and McNeese students with a valid ID will be admitted. Admission will be free and donations will be welcomed to help rebuild McNeese.
Â
"It's nice to finally get an opportunity to see our team compete after everything they've had to endure," said head coach
Kristee Porter. "They've been working hard in practice and making improvements so we will finally get a chance to see where we are at this point in the season.
Â
"One thing we have learned is that each day we get to be on the court together is a gift and we have to take full advantage of it."
Â
The season will consist of a 12-match conference schedule with six home matches and six road matches. McNeese will also host Nicholls, Central Arkansas, New Orleans, Northwestern State, and Sam Houston. The conference tournament is scheduled for April 2-3 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Â
The team makeup consists of seven players from the 2019 squad (
Lauren Burt,
Regan Stiawalt,
Alexis Lambert,
Caitlin Sharrock,
Macee Krpec,
Madison Fontenot, and
Kendall Glueck). Porter added eight student-athletes in her first year including five transfers (
Jaiden Kennedy/Lubbock Christian;
Chloe Mullins/Blinn College;
Shelby Epley/Temple College;
Baylee Laskoskie/Southeastern La.;
Bria Plante/North Florida) along with freshmen
Keilee Guinn (Frisco, TX.),
Ceci Harness (Alvin, TX.),
Caleigh Ross (Pearland, TX.), and
Jaylin Aguirre (Houston, TX.).
Â
Southeastern La. began its season last weekend with a 3-1 win at Tulane last Thursday before splitting a doubleheader at Southern Miss last Friday with a 3-1 win in the first match and a 3-2 loss in the second match.
Â
The Lady Lions are coached by former Cowgirl assistant Jeremy White who is in his second season at the university.
