CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas—McNeese volleyball put up a solid performance in a 3-0 (21-25, 23-25, 21-25) Southland Conference loss at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday night. The match was much closer than the scores indicate but the Cowgirls couldn't win crucial points during the match to continue its momentum or stop the scoring runs by the Islanders.
Regan Stiawalt recorded a double double (11 kills, 17 digs) to lead the Cowgirls in kills and digs.
Lauren Burt ended the match with a scorching .778 hitting percent on seven kills in nine attempts without an error.
Alexis Lambert and
Madison Fontenot also ended the match with double figure digs. Lambert picked up 16 and Madison had 10.
Caitlin Sharrock dished out a team high 12 assists while
Jaiden Kennedy was credited with five blocks.
The loss drops McNeese to 5-6 overall and in conference play while Texas A&M-CC improves to 10-4 overall and 8-3 in the SLC. McNeese will conclude its regular season with a match at Incarnate Word Saturday.
SET 1: TAMU-CC opened the match by scoring the first three points and continued to extend the lead to 20-16. McNeese put together a string of four straight points to tie the set at 20 apiece. Two consecutive kills by Kennedy and one by Stiawalt along with an Islander error allowed the Cowgirls to even the set. After both team traded points, TAMUCC scored the final four points of the set with two coming off Cowgirl errors
SET 2: Both teams traded points early on in the set and with the it tied at nine, McNeese scored three straight points behind two kills from Stiawalt and one by Sharrock to lead 12-9. The Cowgirls extended their lead to 16-12 on kills by Burt and Stiawalt. The Islander never went away and scored three straight points to trail 16-15. A kill by Glueck put the Cowgirls up 17-15 but the Cowgirls couldn't hold the lead as AMCC would score four straight points to take a 19-17 lead and then a 22-18 lead. McNeese continued to battle and came back to retake the lead, 23-22 following five straight points but the Islanders would go on to score the final three points of the set to win the set 25-23;
SET 3: McNeese opened the set with back-to-back block assists to take a 2-0 lead but once AMCC took a 16-13 lead the Islanders never looked back as they would outscore the Cowgirls 19-8 the rest of the way to pick up the win.
