San Antonio, TX- A late second half equalizer from McNeese's Havana Johnson put the Cowgirls on the board as the team's first Southland Conference road match against Incarnate Word ended in a 1-1 draw Friday night.
After being down ten players for the past two weekends the Cowgirls returned eight players to the squad for this weekend's road trip and it paid off in getting a point on the road.
1st HALF:Â
The Cardinals took an early lead in the ninth minute when Sophie Krall scored her second goal of the season. UIW shot the ball five times while holding McNeese to zero shots in the first half.Â
"UIW was taking dangerous shots from outside the box and we just weren't able to create those same opportunities," said head coach Drew Fitzgerald. "They were definitely getting better looks from distance than we were."Â
2nd HALF:Â
In the 70th minute of the match the Cowgirls found their opportunity to tie the game. Morgan Schooley played a ball through the middle to Magalie Depot whose shot bounced of the crossbar and was tracked down by Maddie Neidig who then played a short ball in that was scored by Johnson. Â
"It was definitely a battle," said Fitzgerald. "I'm proud of the effort that the team put in to getting the game back even."Â
OVERTIME:Â
Neither team could find the back of the net in OT in hopes of a desired golden goal. Â
Senior goalkeeper Emma Roccaforte made her return inside the posts after not playing since the Cowgirls' season opener at Rice. She tallied up nine saves in 110 minutes during Friday night's contest. Â
"It feels great to finally be back after a long time off. I'm really proud of the team's energy and grit on and off the field to get back in such a tough game. We held a quality team and got some good chances, so I'm excited to continue playing and get back to where I left off," said Roccaforte. Â
