LAKE CHARLES - For the second-straight game, the Southland Conference Baseball Championship Series was decided via the walk-off, and tonight, the Cowboys were on the wrong end. The McNeese Cowboys fell 3-2 to Southeastern in the second game of the best-of-three Southland Conference Baseball Championship Series Friday night at Joe Miller Ballpark.
The Cowboys scored two runs on 11 hits led by multi-hit performances by Payton Harden, Brad Burckel, Josh Leslie, and Reid Bourque.
Daniel Hecker started for the Cowboys and threw 3.2 scoreless innings while allowing four hits and recording one strikeout. Hecker gave way to Zane Zeppuhar in the fourth and he induced an inning-ending fly out with the bases loaded. Burrell Jones threw 2.1 innings out of the bullpen and allowed only one run. Jones escaped a one-out bases-loaded jam in the seventh - recording a strikeout and a flyout to left.Â
Brian Shadrick (1-2) was charged with the loss as he was responsible for the first two to reach in the ninth. Daniel Dugas (4-2) threw 3.1 innings of relief to claim the result, allowing no runs. Â
The Cowboys broke through first with Josh Leslie swinging on the first pitch with two outs in the first inning to drive in a pair of runs.Â
Southeastern plated their first run in the fifth inning on a Shea Thomas sac fly that allowed Preston Faulkner to score.
The Lions tied the game in the bottom of the eighth when Joe Delaney slid in just under the tag of catcher Andruw Gonzales at home on a sacrifice bunt, the play was reviewed and upheld.Â
Two straight singles and a walk loaded the bases for the Lions in the ninth, the Lions would score the winning run on another base-on-balls.
