LAFAYETTE—McNeese and UL-Lafayette women's soccer teams played to a 2-2 tie here Wednesday night in an exhibition game that marked the final tune-up for the Cowgirls who will host Sam Houston next Friday, August 19 in its regular season and home opener.
With 28 seconds left in the third and final 30-minute period and the Cowgirls trailing 2-1, McNeese tied the game on an own goal in what was a mad scramble inside the box following a Cowgirl corner kick in an attempt to avoid the ball from going into the net but the result was an own goal in favor of the Cowgirls that tied the game.
McNeese took an early 1-0 lead in the 12
th minute when
Rachel Young scored off a double assist from
Kambrie McFarland and
Salma Elhaimer. The lead lasted for just over six minutes when the Cajuns tied the game on a cross in the 18
th minute. Alyssa Abbott scored the equalizer off an assist by Haily Waterhouse.
Abbott struck again for her second goal of the game in the 75
th minute by putting the go ahead goal in the left corner of the net for a 2-1 Cajun lead.
McNeese was credited with five shots with one apiece coming from Young, Elhaimer,
Abbi Morrell,
Morgan Schooley, and
Avery Baker.
UL-Lafayette was credited with nine shots with Abbott leading the Cajuns with two shots.
Both teams used two goalkeepers.
Jackie Kelly and
Briana O'Dell split time at the net for the Cowgirls with O'Dell picking up two saves.
