LAKE CHARLES—Magalie Depot's first goal of the season in the 72nd minute proved to be the game winning goal in Wednesday night's McNeese women's soccer 2-1 win over Southern for the Cowgirls' second win of the season.

"First off Southern is a really good team," said head coach Drew Fitzgerald. "They have come so far in the last four years, their coaching staff has done a really good job and their players played hard. I thought we bounced back really well. We had several players step up due to the injuries we have right now."

McNeese (2-3-0) took a 1-0 lead on a Salma Elhaimer header off a corner kick from Kiana Kukaua in the 53rd minute. The goal for Elhaimer is her second of the season.

"Beyond the two corner kicks from Kiana (Kukaua), she was fantastic, I thought she had a great night. I would have to give her the game ball if we would be giving those out."

McNeese utilized another corner kick, again from Kukaua that allowed Depot to put her ball in the back of the net. The two assists for Kukaua are the first of the season for her.

Southern (1-3-1) made the game interesting when Victoria Thomas put the Jaguars on the board in the 82nd minute but the Cowgirls controlled the ball for the remainder of the game to seal the win.

McNeese will return to the pitch Sept. 9 when the Cowgirls will travel to Nicholls for its Southland Conference opener.
