LAKE CHARLES—McNeese women's tennis will open its 2023 season at Prairie View under first year head coach Gabby Moore one day earlier than expected. The Cowgirls were scheduled to travel to Prairie View on Saturday, Jan. 21 but the match was moved up one day to Jan. 20 to avoid possible rain. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
Prairie View (0-3) will have a head start on the Cowgirls, having played three matches, and are scheduled to play a doubleheader against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi today (Thursday). The Lady Panthers dropped a doubleheader at Sam Houston on Jan. 15 followed by a 7-0 loss at Texas A&M on Jan. 17 to start their season.
Match Notes
Head Coach Gabby Moore: Head coach Gabby Moore will make her Cowgirl coaching debut this Friday, Jan. 20 against Prairie View. Moore was named head coach on May 23, 2002, after having spent the previous five seasons as both the men's and women's head coach at Jackson State where she guided the Lady Tigers to a SWAC championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 2022 with a 17-7 overall record and an undefeated 9-0 conference record. The men's team finished second in the lead standings and advanced to the SWAC championship match in 2022.
Three Cowgirls Make Their McNeese Debut: Transfer Emma-Lou Pommiers and freshmen Heta Nuutinen and Maria Wang Martinez will make their McNeese debut on Friday. Pommiers is a junior transfer from Eastern Michigan. The match will also mark the collegiate debut for Nuutinen and Martinez.
Cowgirls On The Road: McNeese will begin its season on the road for its first four matches. Following Friday's match at Prairie View, McNeese will travel to San Antonio, Texas for a Jan. 22 match against Our Lady of the Lake. McNeese will then play Grambling (Jan. 27) and Missouri State (Jan. 29) in Ruston.
Nine Home Matches On The 2023 Schedule: McNeese has nine scheduled home matches on the schedule this season. The Cowgirls will host Southern on Feb. 4 in its home opener. McNeese will also host Alcorn (Feb. 25), Dillard (Mar. 3), Stephen F. Austin (Mar. 11), and Southland Conference matches against New Orleans (Mar. 24), Nicholls (Mar. 26), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Apr. 6), Incarnate Word (Apr. 8), and Lamar (Apr. 13).
Southland Conference Openers: The Southland Conference opener is a March 24 home match against New Orleans. The Cowgirls will travel to Southeastern (Mar. 31) for its first conference road match.
Southland Conference Tournament: The SLC Tournament is scheduled for April 20-23 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
