McNeese student-athletes visit Lake Charles Charter Academy

LAKE CHARLES – Several McNeese student-athletes visited students at the Lake Charles Charter Academy last week, reading books that centered around LCCA's core values of Leadership, Character, Commitment and Achievement while answering questions from the kids.

"We were excited to have the McNeese athletes visit our school," commented Kathie Istre, LCCA Principal. "Our students were thrilled to meet with them and ask them unending questions about their lives. The MSU athletes spoke about college life as a student-athlete and the importance of getting an education.

"This partnership is important because it supports our students in setting ambitious goals and envisioning their future."

Student-athletes from McNeese football, basketball, softball and track & field programs enjoyed their visit with the kids ranging from Pre-K to the fifth grade.

"It was great to interact with the kids," said McNeese quarterback Nate Glantz. "Anytime we can put a smile on a kid's face and hopefully make a positive impact, that's what being a college student-athlete is all about."

"They made a lasting impression," said third-grade teacher Kayla Hebert. "They brought a positive spirit to our learning environment and the kids loved getting to know them. It's important for our students to have a positive role model to look up to. All of the teachers appreciated the maturity and the impact these athletes made in our building."

In addition to reading books, the student-athletes spoke to the kids on leadership, developing good habits, and being a team player.

"These are lessons our kids can carry with them all through life," said Hebert.

"I'm so glad we were able to put this together and have our student-athletes give back to our community in this way," said Heath Schroyer, McNeese Director of Athletics. "The children of our community are our future. This athletic department will always look to invest in our future and community.

"I've said since day one, our student-athletes and our department will embrace Lake Charles and Southwest Louisiana and this is another example of that commitment. We're just getting started."

Schroyer made a point of emphasis to give credit to Megan Soileau, Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services, LCCA Principal, Kathie Istre and third grade teacher Kayla Hebert.

"Those three ladies are devoted educators and brought this idea to fruition."
