CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The McNeese Cowgirl soccer team has earned the No. 3 seed in the 2023 Southland Conference Soccer Tournament and will open up play on Wednesday at 1 against No. 6 Southeastern.

The tournament is hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and will be played at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer and Track & Field Stadium. All matches will broadcast live on ESPN+.

The Cowgirls posted an 8-7-3 overall record in the regular season including a 5-3-2 mark in league play to finish third in the standings, their second top three finish in the last three years, and improved from seventh place last season.

Southeastern posted a 6-10-1 record, 4-4-1 in league play, tying for fourth in the standings at 13 points with Northwestern State and A&M-Corpus Christi but due to the tiebreaker scenarios, fell to the No. 6 seed.

The Cowgirls and Lions played to a 1-1 tie back on October 15 in Lake Charles in the only meeting on the season.

McNeese will be making its 19th appearance in the postseason tourney, second-most in the conference among current teams behind Southeastern, who will be appearing for the 23rd time. The Cowgirls have posted a 9-15-1 record in tournament play with one championship (2006) and two runner-up finishes (2007, 2008).

The Cowgirls and Lions have met just three times in the tournament with Southeastern winning twice with the last matchup coming in the 2012 first round where SLU won 2-0.

The winner of the game will advance to Friday's semifinal round to play top seed and regular season repeat champion Lamar.
