WBB: Yespes Records First Career Double Double In Loss To Prairie View

LAKE CHARLES— Prairie View scored 66 points in the paint and scored 23 points off 22 McNeese turnovers on its way to an 85-70 women's basketball win Sunday afternoon.
 
McNeese (1-1) scored the first five points of the game to take the early lead but a 10-3 run by the Panthers gave them a 10-8 lead and one they never gave up.
 
The Cowgirls trailed by as many as 16 points midway through the third quarter but cut the deficit to nine points with 2:30 left in the game following a three-pointer by Boston Berry and steal and layup by Mireia Yespes.
 
Prairie View (2-0) outscored McNeese 8-2 in the final two minutes of the game to seal the win.  All eight of Prairie View's final points of the game came off layups.
 
Yespes led McNeese with her first career double double (16 points, 11 rebounds) and was joined in double figures by freshman Azjah Reeves with 15 points, also a career high in her young collegiate career.  Yespes was six of eight from the field and four of eight from the free throw line.  Nine of her 11 rebounds came on the defensive end.
 
Prairie View placed four players in double figures with Ryann Payne leading all players with a game high 18 points.
 
The Panthers out rebounded the Cowgirls 48-39 and caused McNeese to turn the ball over 22 times.
 
McNeese will remain home to host its inaugural MTE (Multi Team Even) this weekend beginning Thursday, Nov. 16 against Miss Valley State at 7 p.m.
 
1st Quarter
• McNeese scored the first five points of the game
• Prairie View went on an 10-3 run to take at 10-8 lead
• Prairie View held a 19-15 lead at the end of the quarter
 
2nd Quarter
• Prairie View held a seven-point lead 26-19
• McNeese went on a run and pulled to within one point (28-27) on a steal and layup by Ana Cabañas midway through the quarter
• PV then went on a 14-5 run in the final 5:23 left to lead 42-32 halftime lead  
 
3rd Quarter
• Prairie View held as much as a 16-point lead in the quarter
• McNeese cut the lead to 10 points on two free throws by Helena Galunic
 
4th Quarter
• Prairie View led by 14 points heading into the quarter
• McNeese cut the lead to nine points (77-66) following a three-pointer by Boston Berry and a steal and a layup
• Prairie View outscored McNeese 8-2 in the final two minutes of the game will all eight points coming from layups
