Cowboys improve to 3-0 after 110-46 win over CC

LAKE CHARLES – Christian Shumate scored 15 points with 10 rebounds to record his 23rd career double-double and McNeese rolled off a school record 41-straight points scored over a 12:59 span covering two halves as the Cowboys cruised to a 110-46 win over Champion Christian on Monday night.

The win improved McNeese's record to 3-0 for the first time since the 185-86 season and will look to go 4-0 for the first time since 1972-73 when it hosts LeTourneau at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.

Shumate was one of seven Cowboys to score in double-figures. Cameron Jones added 15 points while DJ Richards scored 12, Antavion Collum and Javohn Garcia 11 each, and Omar Cooper and Nasir Mann 10 apiece.

McNeese had little trouble with the Tigers and opened up the game midway through when it went on a 28-0 run in the final 9:11 of the first half, taking a 50-12 lead into the break. The Cowboys added to the run with a 13-0 stretch in the first four minutes of the second half to build a 63-12 lead.

By that time most of the starters were done for the night. Shumate got his second double-double on the season after playing just over 17 minutes.

The Cowboys connected on 46 of 71 shots from the field for 65 percent and knocked down 7 of 14 from long range. Champion Christian, who did not have a player score in double-figures, was held to 16 of 53 (30 percent) shooting and 6 of 25 (24 percent) from behind the arc.

McNeese dished out 24 assists on its 46 made buckets and turned the ball over just 11 times. The Cowboys forced CCC into 21 turnovers and scored 29 points off the errors. The Cowboys also scored a whopping 76 points in the paint.
