LAKE CHARLES – McNeese sophomore linebacker
Micah Davey, the No. 1 tackler in the FCS this season, has been named to the 2023 All-Southland Conference Football First Team, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Two other Cowboys, junior offensive lineman
Cole Leclair and sophomore wide receiver
Jon McCall, were named to the All-SLC Second Team.
A Baton Rouge native, Davey was recently named a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award as the nation's top defensive player. He led the FCS in three different statistical categories – total tackles (153), tackles per game (15.3) and solo tackles per game (8.3). His 15.3 per game average set a new McNeese record while his 153 total stops rank as the sixth-most in school history in a single season.
Davey recorded double-digits in tackles in all 10 games on the season and became the first player in school history to collect 20 or more tackles in back-to-back games (20 vs. HCU; 21 at Lamar). The 21 tackles at Lamar were the second-most in a game in school history and ninth-most in Southland history.
Playing in his second season with the Cowboys as a starter on the offensive line, Leclair started in all 10 games on the season and in all 21 games as a Cowboy over the last two years.
The Middleburg, Florida native graded out as the highest offensive lineman on the season and played 599 out of 601 stated plays.
McCall was the top receiving target for the Cowboys this season, leading the team with 32 catches, 504 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
A native of New Orleans, McCall ranked fourth in the conference in TD catches, sixth in receiving yards and eighth in catches. His 15.8 yards per catch average rated as the seventh highest in the league while his 50.4 yards per game mark ranked sixth. He made at least one catch in all 10 games and hauled in three or more catches in each of the final eight contests.
Nicholls, the 2023 league champion, was awarded with four superlative winners including running back Jaylon Spears for Player of the Year, Tim Rebowe for Coach of the Year, Mark Barthelemy as Offensive Lineman of the Year, and defensive lineman Rasheed Lovelace as Freshman of the Year.
UIW wide receiver Brandon Porter was selected Offensive Player of the Year while teammate and quarterback Zach Calzada the Newcomer of the Year. HCU linebacker Jalyx Hunt garnered Defensive Player of the Year honors.
