Shumate tops 1,000 career points; Cowboys fall to Bulldogs

| By:
Box Score RUSTON – McNeese's Christian Shumate scored 15 points in Wednesday's 71-62 loss to Louisiana Tech, but despite the loss, he surpasses a milestone with his 1,000th career point to become only the 32nd player in school history to achieve the mark.

Shumate recorded his 600th rebound in Tuesday's win over Texas State, and with that, is one of 12 players in McNeese basketball history to join the 1,000-point/600-rebound club.

"He brings it every day," said Cowboys' acting head coach Brandon Chambers. "He's always in the gym working to get better. And he's just scratched the surface of his abilities."

Shumate needed 12 points entering the game to hit the milestone and he had seven at the half. But a questionable foul call right before the end of the first half tacked on his third foul of the game, which limited his playing time early in the second half.

He tallied his 1000th point with a three-pointer with 4:22 to play that pulled McNeese (5-2) to within 62-58 after being down by 11 just three minutes earlier.

Shahada Wells, who finished with 11 points, five assists and three steals, created a turnover with one of his steals and scored on a fast-break layup to cut the margin to 62-60 with 3:45 on the clock.

But Tech (4-1) withstood McNeese run and took advantage at the free throw line where it sank 9 of 10 freebies in the final 2:21 to help pull out the win without hitting a field goal in the last 3:17.

Cameron Jones and Javohn Garcia each scored 11 for the Cowboys. Jones went on a run midway through the second half where he scored seven straight points to help McNeese put together a 9-1 run and cut a 48-37 deficit to 49-46.

But the Bulldogs answered that run with a 9-0 stretch itself to climb back to an 11-point advantage at 57-46.

Daniel Batcho led the Bulldogs with 17 points, taking advantage of his 6-foot-11 size to connect on 7 of 10 from the field. Tahlik Chavez and Tyler Henry each scored 14 and Sean Newman Jr. added 11.

McNeese shot 45 percent for the game, hitting 25 of 56 shots, and was 6 of 22 for 27 percent from three-point range. The Bulldogs made 19 of 47 for 40 percent from the field while 10 of those 19 makes came from behind the arc where Tech hit 10 of 27 for the contest.

The biggest discrepancy came at the free throw line where Tech attempted 29 (23-29) shots to McNeese nine (6-9).

Louisiana Tech led 35-29 at the half after scoring five straight in the final 1:29 of the first period. The Bulldogs connected on 11 field goals in the half, eight of those from three-point range.

Following Tuesday's game at UAB to wrap up a four-game road swing, McNeese will be back in Legacy Center on Saturday, December 2 when it hosts UT Martin.
