CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - McNeese's soccer program (9-8-4, 5-3-2 SLC) fell to Lamar (15-2-3, 9-0-1 SLC) in the Southland Conference Championships 3-1 while seeing four members of the team named to the All-Tournament team Sunday afternoon.
"I think they were a really special group and what they did this year was fantastic," said head coach
Drew Fitzgerald. "They did everything we asked them to all year, including today. We asked them to compete and commit and I think we have a lot to celebrate this year."
Lamar took a 1-0 advantage in the 28th minute of action before extending its lead in the second half to 2-0 in the 60th minute of play.
McNeese responded in the 61st minute of play on a penalty kick goal taken by senior
Kiana Kukaua to make it a 2-1 match in favor of Lamar. The Cardinals got a penalty kick of their own in the 64th minute to make the match 3-1.
Four players were named to the All-Tournament team, highlighted by junior
Jackie Kelly, a goalkeeper, senior
Kiana Kukaua, a midfielder, sister
Kaile Kukaua, a junior midfielder, and senior defender
Morgan Schooley.
"I think its well deserved and all four of them did great all year and in the tournament, I think their quality showed up," praised Fitzgerald.
Both Kukaua's earned a goal during the tournament in addition to Schooley placing one in the net. Schooley's lone goal was the game-winner against HCU to help the Cowgirls to the championship match.
Kelly assisted the team to its first penalty kick shootout victory against Southeastern in the opening round of the tournament. She collected 22 saves through three matches for a percentage of .846. She's credited with a shutout victory over HCU.
The SLC Championships is the first appearance in the title match for thw Cowgirls since 2008 and concludes the season for the blue and gold.
