FRISCO, Texas – McNeese's DJ Richards has won this week's SLC Men's Basketball Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday. McNeese becomes the first repeat winner of Player of the Week honors as Richards joins teammate
Shahada Wells, who earned the honor two weeks ago.
Richards, who helped McNeese post a 2-0 record for the week with wins over Southern Miss 67-48) on Wednesday and a come-from-behind victory over Louisiana-Lafayette (74-72) on Sunday, averaged 20.5 points and connected on 63.2% of his shots for the week, including 60% from three-point range.
The sophomore from Houston opened the week by scoring a career-high 24 points against Southern Miss behind 8 of 14 shooting from the field (6-11 from 3FG range). He followed that up with a 17-point outing against ULL where he made 4 of 5 from the field and 3-4 from 3FG range with all three 3s coming in the second half, including his third and final trey with 47 seconds to play that put the Cowboys on top 73-72.
For the season, Richards is third on the team with an 11.7 scoring average. He's ranked fifth in the Southland Conference with 27 total threes made, sixth with 2.3 three-pointers made per game and is hitting 49.1% (27-55) from long range on the year.
McNeese, which is 10-2 on the season and out to its best start in 51 years (1972-73), won't return to action until it visits Michigan on December 29.
