CELINA, Texas-- McNeese softball posted a 2-0 record here Saturday on Day 2 of the Tracy Beard College Classic with wins over South Dakota and UT-Arlington.
McNeese (6-2) opened Saturday's action with a 4-1 win over South Dakota (2-3) then ended their day with an 8-0 (5 inn.) run rule win over a UT-Arlington (4-4) team that defeated nationally ranked Kentucky 4-2 on Friday.
Against South Dakota, McNeese took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning when
Corine Poncho scored on a wild pitch. McNeese added three more runs on four hits in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 4-0. McNeese opened the fourth inning with three straight singles by
Crislyne Moreno, Poncho, and
Kaylee Lopez. Moreno scored on Lopez's single for the second Cowgirl run of the game.
Mariana Torres grounded out to short bringing Poncho home and pinch runner
Erin Ardoin scored on a throw down to second base that caught Reese Rayna stealing.
South Dakota avoided the shutout by scoring their run in the fifth inning off a RBI double by Mia Kraimer.
Shaelyn Sanders improved to 2-0 on the year with the win after allowing one run on five hits, two strikeouts and two walks. Freshman
Lindsay Davis picked up her first collegiate save in 2 2/3 innings of relief of Sanders. Davis allowed one walk in the nine batters she faced.
In the nightcap against the Mavericks,
Whitney Tate hurled her third career one-hitter in pitching at least four innings to pick up the complete game shutout to remain undefeated at 3-0 on the year. UTA picked up their only hit of the game in the first inning when the Mavericks' second batter of the game doubled to right center. Tate struck out three and allowed only one walk, her first walk of the season.
Offensively, McNeese pounded out 10 hits including five doubles. Torres led the Cowgirls at the plate with two hits, both of which were doubles to go along with four RBI.
McNeese opened the game with four runs on four hits in the first inning including doubles by Moreno and Torres.
The Cowgirls tacked on four more runs on five hits in the third inning for an 8-0 lead. Lopez, Torres, and
Brooke Otto were all credited with RBI in the inning.
McNeese will close out tournament action Sunday in a 12:30 p.m. game against No. 22 North Texas.
