LAKE CHARLES – McNeese shortstop
Josh Leslie capped off a stellar weekend by knocking in five runs after going 3-for-5 at the plate to help lead the Cowboys to a 9-4 win over Yale and completing the weekend sweep.
The victory improved McNeese's record to 15-5 on the season, matching the second-best record through 20 games in school history, while the Cowboys won their 11
th-straight game at home.
Starting pitcher
Zach Voss (1-2) picked up the win after he threw five innings and gave up one run on four hits, walked one and struck out three.
Christian Vega recorded his second save on the year after tossing the final 2.2 innings and allowed an unearned run and one hit with four strikeouts.
At the plate, the Cowboys recorded 13 hits as four players recorded multiple knocks in the game. In addition to Leslie's performance, first baseman
Braley Hollins finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and a double, center fielder
Payton Harden went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored, and second baseman
Brad Burckel was 2-for-3 with a home run, RBI and two runs scored. Burckel hit his third homer of the year in the bottom of the seventh to widen the lead to 7-3.
Yale (4-9) finished with 10 hits in the game and was led by catcher Beck Milner's 3-for-4 showing.
Bulldog starting pitcher Reid Easterly (2-1) took the loss after he allowed six runs on 10 hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
McNeese will return to the diamond on Tuesday night when it hosts the University of Houston at 6 p.m.
Notebook:
• McNeese is 15-5 through the first 20 games for the second time under head coach
Justin Hill. The 2017 Cowboys opened the season 15-5 on their way to winning the Southland Conference championship. McNeese was also 15-5 in 2000, another championship season.
• The Cowboys' best record through the first 20 games came in 1989 when the team posted a 16-4 record.

Josh Leslie ended the weekend going 6-for-15 at the plate with nine RBIs and two doubles.

Brad Burckel also had a great weekend at the plate going 6-for-11 with a triple, home run, two RBIs and three runs scored.
• McNeese turned a season-high four double plays on Sunday. The school record for most DPs turned in a game is five.
• The Cowboys outscored Yale 11-2 through the first three innings on the weekend, and for the season, McNeese is outscoring its opponents 49-22 through the first three frames.
• The 11-straight home wins is the fourth-longest streak in school history. The school record is 16 (end of 1995 and beginning of 1996) then 15 (1989) and 14 (2017).
