LAKE CHARLES – Nicholls scored two runs in the top of the 12
th inning to beat McNeese 8-6 after surviving a couple of Cowboy walk-off attempts.
With the game tied 6-6 through nine innings, McNeese (16-7, 1-1 SLC) appeared it was on its way to a win when
Cooper Hext hit a two-out single up the middle with runners on first and second, but when
Braden Duhon rounded third as the winning run, he slipped down and had to retreat back to the bag.
Brad Burckel flied out to center field to end the inning.
Then in the 11
th,
Josh Leslie led-off the inning with his second double of the game and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Dean Bittner. Bittner then took second uncontested to put runners at second and third with no outs.
Taylor Darden's fly ball to right field wasn't deep enough for Leslie to tag at third, then after a Nicholls pitching change,
Payton Harden, who had two hits on the day, struck out swinging but reached first base on a wild pitch. But instead of the catcher throwing Harden out at first, he picked off Leslie at third base for the second out and a strike out followed as the Colonels escaped the inning.
Nicholls (14-11, 1-1) took a 5-0 lead with all of those runs coming in the fifth inning but the Cowboys clawed back with two runs in the fourth off a Duhon two-run double. Nicholls got a run back in the fifth to go up 6-2 but Leslie blasted an RBI double that scored Hext to cut the gap to 6-3.
Leslie struck again in the seventh inning with a two-run homer to make it a 6-5 game, then in the eighth, a lead-off single by Harden followed by a one-out single from Duhon led to a two-out RBI single by Hext that scored Harden and tied the game 6-6.
McNeese finished with 18 hits in the game while Nicholls pounded 14. The Colonels left 18 runners on base while the Cowboys left 14.
Nicholls relief pitcher Nico Saltaformaggio (2-0) picked up the win after entering the game with one out in the 11
th inning while Cowboy reliever
Christian Vega (2-1) took the loss after he threw three innings and was credited for giving up two runs on two hits.
The two teams will play the rubber match on Sunday beginning at 1.
