HOUSTON, Texas— McNeese took advantage of a Houston error in the ninth inning that helped the Cowgirls put two runs in scoring position and the Cowgirls capitalized on the miscue on its way to a 4-2 extra inning win Tuesday night. With the win, McNeese completes the season sweep over the Cougars (18-19).
McNeese (29-12) picked up 10 hits in the game and was led with two hits apiece by
Rylie Bouvier,
Kaylee Lopez, and
Erin Ardoin.
Ashley Vallejo picked up the win in relief to improve to 10-7 on the year and her sixth straight win.
The Cowgirls took an early 2-0 lead in the sixth inning when the Cowgirls executed a squeeze bunt by Lopez that scored pinch runner Rylie Eyster from third. With Lopez on first and
Crislyne Moreno at third, the Cowgirls pulled off a double steal that allowed Moreno to score for the 2-0 lead.
The Cowgirls held the lead until the bottom of the seventh when Houston tied the game with two runs on three hits, sending the game into extra innings.
Reese Reyna led the top of the ninth off with a walk and advanced all the way to third when Bouvier hit a grounder to first and the first baseman attempted to get Reyna out at second but a miscommunication between Houston's shortstop and second baseman allowed the ball to go into left field putting Reyna on third and Bouvier on second.
Moreno hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield that brought Reyna home for the 3-2 lead then Lopez singled to right scoring Bouvier for the 4-2 lead.
Houston didn't go down without a fight as the Cougars loaded the bases with two outs but Vallejo got Bree Cantu to fly out to Ardoin at the wall in centerfield to end the game.
McNeese will return home this weekend to host Nicholls in a Southland Conference series beginning Friday.
