SB: Torres' Walk-Off Single Gives Cowgirls Series Sweep Over Nicholls

LAKE CHARLES—Mariana Torres' walk-off single to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Reese Reyna from second base to give McNees a 5-4 series finale win over Nicholls Saturday. 
 
With the win, McNeese completes the sweep over the Colonels and improve to 32-12 overall and 14-1 in the SLC, extending the Cowgirls' winning streak to six games.  The loss drops Nicholls to 22-20 overall and 9-9 in the SLC.
 
Nicholls took an early 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings off a leadoff solo home run by Molly VanderBout in the top of the second.  The Colonels took advantage of a Cowgirl error in the second inning for their second run of the game.
 
McNeese got the offense going in the bottom of the third inning and scored all four runs with two outs to take a 4-2 lead. Reyna singled to left before Torres doubled to right center field, scoring Reyna to cut the put the Cowgirls on the board.  Crislyne Moreno was intentionally walked and Corrine Poncho pinch hit for Kaylee Lopez.  Poncho came up big in her plate appearance and with a 3-2 count, Poncho's first career home run couldn't have come at a better time.  The three three-run home run gave McNeese a 4-2 lead.
 
After three scoreless innings, the Colonels tied the game in the top of the seventh with two runs on a RBI double by Brynne Songy and a two-out game tying RBI single by Abby Anderson that tied the game at four all.
 
Reyna led to bottom of the seventh off with a single up the middle and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Rylie Bouvier, setting up Torres' game winning hit.
 
McNeese picked up 10 hits in the win with Torres leading the way with a 3 for 4 plate appearance with two RBI and scored one run.  Reyna and Poncho both ended their day with two hits apiece and Poncho leading the Cowgirls with three RBI.
 
The Cowgirls used three pitchers with Shaelyn Sanders getting the start and going 3.0 complete innings and giving up one earned run of three hits.  Whitney Tate came into to relieve Sanders and allowed two earned runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings.  Ashley Vallejo picked up the win in relief of Tate to improve to 12-7 overall and remained undefeated at 7-0 in the SLC.
 
McNeese will remain home to host LSU at 6 p.m. Tuesday and UT-Arlington at 6 p.m. Wednesday night.
