NATCHITOCHES – McNeese starting pitcher Grant Rogers suffered his first loss of the season as Northwestern State scored three runs in six innings off the ace righty en route to a 5-2 win over the Cowboys in the opening game of a Southland Conference baseball series.

Two of the three runs allowed by Rogers (10-1) were earned as he gave up eight hits, walked two and struck out three. NSU starter Cal Carver (6-3) held the Cowboys to just one hit through the first seven innings and three hits in his eight frames of work, allowing two runs, walked one and struck out two.

The loss dropped the Cowboys to 31-17 overall and 11-11 in conference play. Northwestern State improved to 26-21 on the season and 11-8 in the league.

The series will continue on Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Demons went up 1-0 in the second inning on an RBI single by Gray Rowlett that scored Jake Haze who started the inning with a double. The lead went to 2-0 after NSU scored on an RBI single by Daunte Stuart in the fifth inning then added a run in each the sixth and seventh innings to build a 4-0 lead.

The Cowboys got on the board in the eighth inning when Payton Harden hit a one-out single, then with two outs, Cooper Hext drove the ball over the right-center field wall for a two-run home run, his eighth of the season, to cut the lead to 4-2. But the Demons added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning off Jeffrey Elkins' 11th home run of the season to make it 5-2.
