Pokes blank No. 2 UIW, 3-0, to advance in SLC Tourney

LAKE CHARLES – Another superb pitching performance for McNeese to open up day three of the 2023 Southland Conference Baseball Tournament lifted the Cowboys to a 3-0 win over No. 2-seeded UIW in an elimination game on Thursday.
 
Bryson Hudgens and Brock Barthelemy combined to throw the second shutout for McNeese in the three games so far in the tournament. Hudgens (1-0) earned his first win of the season in only his fifth start since returning from Tommy John surgery. He threw six innings and gave up five hits, walked none and struck out two.
 
Barthelemy threw the final three innings in collecting his third save on the year as he gave up two hits, walked one and struck out three.
 
McNeese's pitching staff and defense have allowed only three runs in 31.2 innings in tournament play.
 
The Cowboys (35-22) advance to play at 2:30 on Friday against the loser of Thursday night's New Orleans/Northwestern State game. Should McNeese win, it'll turn around and play at 6 p.m.
 
McNeese scored all three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
 
Third baseman Taylor Darden started a one-out rally with a double into left field. Catcher Schuyler Thibodaux followed with a bunt single to third base, advancing Darden to third. After a pop out for the second of the inning, second baseman Brad Burckel's single to center field scored Darden to put the Cowboys up 1-0. Shortstop Josh Leslie followed with a two-run double to make it 3-0.
 
Defensively, the Cowboys turned two double plays to stall potential UIW rallies, Burckel made a behind-the-back toss to Leslie to get a force out at second, and Payton Harden threw out a runner out at home who was tagging from third to score.
 
The Cardinals end their season at 28-26.
 
Notebook:
• Head coach Justin Hill won his 301st career game.
• Hill improves to 19-12 in SLC Tourney games.
• The Cowboys have advanced to Day 3 of tournament play in 7 of the 9 tournaments under Hill.
• McNeese has now won 14 of its last 17 tournament games dating back to the 2019 tourney.
• The Cowboys have recorded two shutout wins in the tournament, just the fourth time that has happened in tourney history. The last was UCA in 2019.
• McNeese has pitched eight shutouts on the season, second-most in school history (record is 9 in 1981).
• Cowboys have tossed 7 shutouts in tournament history, a league record.
