WBB: Cowgirls Open SLC Action At NW State Thursday

LAKE CHARLES- McNeese women's basketball will open Southland Conference play on the road at Northwestern State on Thursday, Jan. 4. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. with the contest streamed on ESPN+. The game can also be heard on Talk Radio 1470 with Bruce Merchant calling all the action.
 
McNeese (4-9, 0-0 SLC) was picked to finish in a tie for fifth place with Houston Christian in the preseason poll while Northwestern State (4-7, 0-0 SLC) was picked to finish seventh.
 
The Cowgirls have dropped four of their last five games and will look to snap a two-game losing streak following its 103-87 home loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff in its final non-conference game of the season on Sunday.
 
Emilia Tenbrock (13.5 ppg.) and Mireia Yespes (11.1 ppg.) are the only Cowgirls averaging in double figures.  Yespes came off the bench against AUPB to record her second career double double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Julia Puente leads McNeese with 5.0 rpg.
 
The Demons have lost three of its last four games and are coming off a 75-39 exhibition win over Champion Christian on Dec. 30.
 
Jiselle Woodson (12.1 ppg.) and Sharna Ayres (10.8 ppg.) are the only double figure scorers for NW State.  Jenny Ntambwe leads the team with 6.1 rpg.  
 
McNeese will remain on the road for the first week of conference action and will travel to Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday, Jan. 6 for a 3:30 p.m. tip.
 
The Cowgirls will host Lamar on Thursday, Jan. 11 in its SLC home opener.
