EDINBURG, Texas-- McNeese volleyball suffered a straight set Southland Conference loss (25-13, 25-23, 25-18) to UTRGV Thursday in a rare mid-morning contest to start a two-match weekend for the Cowgirls. McNeese will travel to Corpus Christi, Texas Saturday for a 1 p.m. match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
With the loss, McNeese falls to 7-14 overall and 3-6 in the SLC while UTRGV improves to 11-8 overall and 7-2 in the SLC.
URGV opened the match by winning the first four points of the match then extended their lead to 12-4.
Following a Cowgirl timeout, the Vaqueros outscored McNeese 8-5 to take the first set.
The second set could have gone either way in a set that consisted of 10 ties and three lead changes.
McNeese held an early 6-4 lead but a 9-4 run by UTRGV put the Vaqueros ahead 13-8. With the McNeese trailing 16-13, the Cowgirls went on a 6-1 run to take a 19-17 lead. The Cowgirls were two points away from evening the match, leading 23-21 but UTRGV went on a 4-0 run to claim the set for a 2-0 led.
UTRGV jumped out to an 8-4 lead and never looked back. Trailing 20-12,
Kendall Osgood gave the Cowgirls life with a kill then serving for the next five points to pull the Cowgirls to within three points (21-18). Another 4-0 run by UTRGV ended the set and the match.
