SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—Utah women's basketball, who received votes in this week's USA Today Sports Women's Basketball Coaches Poll, came out firing on all cylinders Monday night on its way to handing McNeese its first loss of the season by a 118-50 score in the first of two consecutive games in the state of Utah.
McNeese will travel to Provo, Utah Tuesday for an 8 p.m. (CT) game at BYU that will be streamed on ESPN+.
Azjah Reeves was the only Cowgirl (3-1) to score in double figures, ending the game with 11 points.
Mireia Yespes led the Cowgirls with eight rebounds on the night.
Utah (3-1) had five players score in double figures in the game. Gianna Kneepkens led all players with 24 points. Maye' Toure' chipped in with 21 points. Maty Wilke and Reese Ross came off the bench to score 19 and 16, respectively. Toure' and Ross both pulled down eight rebounds apiece.
The Utes jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game and never looked back on its way to a 24-9 first quarter lead.
The Utes continued its sharp shooting in the second quarter by going on a 12-3 run to stretch its lead to 24 points (36-12) early in the quarter.
Another run by Utah later in the second gave them a 30-point lead (48-18) midway through the quarter before holding a 62-27 halftime lead.
Utah outscored the Cowgirls 56-23 in the second half and ended the game shooting 60.3 percent from the field, 59.1 from three-point range, making 13 of their 22 attempts and a 79.3 free throw percent (23-29).
McNeese shot 25.8 percent from the field, 21.1 percent from three-point range, and 87.5 percent (14-16) from the free throw line.
