Copeland flirts with triple-double in 103-69 win over LeTourneau

LAKE CHARLES – Quadir Copeland scored a season-high 20 points with a career-best 11 assists and came within one rebound of posting the fourth triple-double in school history, meanwhile Christian Shumate added 22 points as McNeese powered by LeTourneau, 103-69, on Saturday afternoon in the final non-conference home game of the season.

McNeese improved to 5-4 on the season and will next be in action on December 14 when it takes on Mississippi State in Tupelo in the Magnolia Madness. That game will broadcast live on ESPNU at 5 p.m. Saturday's game was considered an exhibition for the Yellowjackets who are a non-D1 member out of the American Southwest Conference in NCAA Division III.

Shumate and Copeland led six Cowboys who scored in double-figures. Sincere Parker added 16 points, Bryant Selebangue 14, DJ Richards Jr. with 12 and Javohn Garcia 10.

Deonte Jackson led LeTourneau with 21 points, 17 of those scored in the first 10 minutes of the game.

McNeese shot 69.5 percent from the field (41-59) and was a blistering 24 of 29 shooting in the second half for 83 percent. The Cowboys also connected on 10 of 21 three-pointers (48 percent) and was perfect from the free throw line, going 11-for-11.

Shumate, Copeland and Selebangue combined to make 22 of 25 from the field, Shumate going 8-for-9 including hitting 4 of 5 from three-point range where he made his first four attempts. Both Copeland and Selebangue each sank 7 of 8 from the field.

LETU had a hot hand as well, hitting 50 percent from the field (28 of 56) and 45 percent from long range (9 of 20).

McNeese led 43-38 at the half but played flat for much of the first 20 minutes and trailing by as many as nine points (20-11) at the 12:46 mark.

From that point, the Cowboys outscored the Yellowjackets 32-18 while being able to deny Jackson the ball, who scored 12 straight points for his team to help build the lead.

The Cowboys trailed 29-25 with 6:40 to play then went on a 13-2 run over the next 4:35 to build a 38-31 lead with 2:05 to play in the half. Shumate hit a couple of free throws with two seconds to play to end the half.

A driving layup by Shumate just over two minutes into the second half gave McNeese its first double-digit lead of the game (48-38) but LeTourneau battled back and trailed by only two, 55-53, with 13:55 remaining.

Copeland made good on an And-1 that jump started a 15-2 run as the Cowboys built a 70-55 lead with 10:13 to play.

Copeland recorded his 10th assist with 2:14 to play and ninth rebound just a few seconds later at the 1:47 mark, but was unable to pull in another rebound the rest of the game as he was looking to become just the fourth player in school history to record a triple-double, and first since the 208-09 season.
