HOUSTON – Fresh off its first-ever season sweep over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday, the first place McNeese Cowboys will visit HCU at 7 p.m. on Monday for the first meeting of the season between the two teams.
The game will broadcast live on ESPN+ and also on the McNeese Radio Network (Magic 92.1 FM and mymagiclc.com).
McNeese (21-3, 10-1 SLC) holds a two-game lead in the Southland Conference standings ahead of three teams knotted up at 7-3 for second place – AMCC, Nicholls and Lamar. McNeese will visit Nicholls on Saturday for the first time this season.
HCU (6-16, 4-7 SLC) is coming off an 86-83 win at home over UIW.
The Huskies have won the last three over the Cowboys in the series but McNeese has captured six of the last 10 games and holds a 22-10 lead in the all-time series.
On Saturday, McNeese's
Antavion Collum led four Cowboy double-figure scorers with 14 points which included a big three-pointer with less than four minutes remaining that gave the Cowboys the cushion it needed to get the win.
Shahada Wells continues to lead the team in scoring with 17.5 points per game while his 3.0 steals per contest jumped him up to No. 2 in the nation.
Christian Shumate, the human highlight reel, leads the conference with 9.5 rebounds per game to go along with 12.2 points. He recorded his sixth double-double on the year Saturday behind 12 points and 13 rebounds which also marked his 27
th career double-double as he moves closer to the school record of 32.
The Huskies are led in scoring by Jay Alvarez with 16.1 ppg, third-best in the conference. As a team, HCU is fifth in the league in field goal shooting (.435) and ninth in 3-point shooting (.297).
McNeese is one win away from tying a school record for most wins in a season as a Division I school.
