SB: Cowgirls Defeat Tarleton State 5-1 In Cowgirl Classic Finale

LAKE CHARLES—McNeese softball improved to 4-1 on the season with its 5-1 win over Tarleton State in the final game of the Cowgirl Classic on Sunday.
 
McNeese picked up seven hits in the game with Mariana Torres leading the Cowgirls with two hits including a double and her first homerun of the season.  Corine Poncho continued her hot start to the season by hitting her fourth homerun this season and third straight game with a homerun.
 
Freshman Samantha Mundine led McNeese with three RBI for a team lead six on the season.
 
The Cowgirls opened their scoring with three runs on four hits in the first inning to take the early lead.  Torres' homerun in the fourth inning put the Cowgirls up 4-1 then Poncho's solo homerun in the fifth inning provided an insurance run.
 
Tarleton State (2-3) scored their only run in the second inning to avoid the shutout.
 
Lindsay Davis (1-0) picked up her first win of the season, allowing three hits in 4 1/3 innings.  Ryann Schexnayder tossed the final 2 2/3 innings of relief, facing 10 batters and allowed two hits.
 
McNeese will remain home to host Baylor at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15 then will welcome No. 1 Oklahoma, Central Arkansas, and Lamar to Lake Charles on the weekend for its Cowgirl Challenge.

• McNeese ended the Cowgirl Classic with a 4-0 record
