Voss' career night helps propel Cowboys over the Aggies in first victory

LAKE CHARLES, La. – Led by a career performance from Zach Voss, the McNeese baseball program (1-4) earned its first victory of the 2024 campaign against New Mexico State (2-3) 2-1 at Joe Miller Ballpark Friday night.

"Everything's just pins and needles until you get the first one. You almost have to go back and watch the game to remember what happened because you're so focused on trying to win the game," said head coach Justin Hill. "There was some pressing after the first four games."

Voss threw a career-high seven strikes against the Aggies in his senior season. On the mound, he threw for 5.2 innings, allowing only four hits and one earned run. The win was credited to redshirt junior Cameron LeJeune who entered in the sixth inning for 3.1 innings of work. LeJeune struck out five on the mound and permitted just a single hit.

"I'm really proud of Zach and thought he did well," praised Hill. "We couldn't leave Cameron sitting over there with a chance to win a ballgame."

Junior Conner Westenburg has his second consecutive three-hit game against the Aggies, hitting 3-for-4 in the outing. He leads the team behind the plate at a batting average of .438 through five games.

Grant Mangrum (junior) and Chase Keeton (redshirt senior) each batted .500, hitting 2-for-4 with the former scoring one run for the Pokes in the sixth inning for the lead.

Braden Duhon, a senior, scored the first run of the game for the blue and gold on a single by Westenburg for the early lead in the third inning.

Freshman Gage Trahan earned his first collegiate start with the Cowboys over at third base, following it up with his first collegiate hit.

Poke Nation outhit New Mexico State nine to five on the diamond with two of those hits coming as extra bases with doubles by Mangrum and Keeton with one a piece. Defensively, the Cowboys only walked two batters while the Aggies allowed one walk.

McNeese continues its series with the Aggies Saturday at 1 p.m. at Joe Miller Ballpark.
