LAKE CHARLES – McNeese softball, the 2024 preseason Southland Conference favorite will open its season with 14 consecutive home games beginning with a 6 p.m. game against the Cal Golden Bears this Thursday, Feb. 8.
The following three days, Feb. 9-11, McNeese will host its own Cowgirl Classic I, the first of three home tournaments on the Cowgirl schedule this season.
McNeese will open tournament play at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 against New Mexico. On Saturday, the Cowgirls will take on Tarleton State at 4 p.m. and Tennessee State at 6:30 p.m. Sunday's schedule has the Cowgirls concluding tournament play with a 1:30 p.m. game against Tarleton State.
Coming off a record setting 47 wins (47-16) with a school record 23 shutouts including 13 Southland Conference shutout wins.
Landreneau and his staff returns 17 letterwinners from the 2023 squad including nine upper classmen that includes five seniors (
Ashley Vallejo,
Shaelyn Sanders,
Chloe Gomez,
Emily Phillips, and
Mariana Torres).Â
Vallejo is coming off a junior campaign that saw her produce a 19-9 overall record with a 2.25 ERA and lead the team with 112 strikeouts and seven shutouts. Sanders posted a 7-1 record with a 1.69 ERA.
Offensively, junior
Reese Reyna is the top Cowgirl hitter returning after ending the 2023 season with a .309 average, tied for a team high with 34 runs scored and 25 stolen bases, was second on the team with 55 hits and third with seven doubles.Â
Crislyne Moreno led the Cowgirls with five home runs and a .470 slugging percent a year ago. Â
