ULL narrowly edges out McNeese in midweek standoff

LAFAYETTE, La. - McNeese Baseball (9-9, 0-0 SLC) fought valiantly against UL-Lafayette (13-8, 2-1 SBC) in a 4-1 loss on the road Wednesday night at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.

"It was good to get out there and knock some of the rust off after a seven-day layoff," said head coach Justin Hill. "I thought the guys competed well."

After patiently waiting through seven innings, the Cowboys struck UL-Lafayette late in the eighth inning to tie up the ballgame at one a piece. Going into the eighth, the Cowboys kicked things off with a walk for senior Peyton LeJeune and a fielder's choice for senior Ben David before collecting their fourth hit of the game on a Conner Westenburg (junior) single.

Bases loaded, senior Cooper Hext was given a fielder's choice as the Ragin' Cajuns earned an out at home to stave off the Cowboys' attack. Chase Keeton, a redshirt senior, patiently earned a walk in the next at-bat to bring in the run for the Pokes, tying it up late.

McNeese held the Ragin' Cajuns scoreless through four innings before permitting a run in the bottom of the fifth as the latter took the lead. UL-Lafayette regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth when they scored three runs earn the victory.

Alexis Gravel made his fifth start of his junior campaign for the Pokes, striking out four batters, three consecutive, over the course of three innings, allowing just one hit. Redshirt senior Ty Abraham and senior Kainin Morrow each posted scoreless innings for the Cowboys.

Poke Nation returns home to host Northwestern for a three-game series this weekend, March 22-24 at Joe Miller Ballpark.
