LAKE CHARLES—McNeese softball picked up its 30
th win of the season Wednesday night, defeating Sam Houston 4-2 to improve to 30-15 on the season.
The 30-win season is the seventh under eighth year head coach
James Landreneau. The 2020 season in which the Cowgirls got off to a 19-7 record was cancelled due to COVID 19.
Despite being out hit 8-5 by Sam Houston (17-26), McNeese took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a RBI double by
Samantha Mundine that drove in
Alexis Dibbley who reached on a Bearkat error.
Sam Houston took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning off three hits, but the lead didn't last long as the Cowgirls scored three runs on two hits to regain the lead.
Dibbley doubled down the right field line that scored
Mariana Torres who led the inning off with a walk to give McNeese the 3-2 lead.
After Mundine drew a walk and a Sam Houston pitching change,
Crislyne Moreno singled in pinch runner
Brooke Otto for an insurance run.
Sam Houston left 11 baserunners stranded, including the bases loaded in the third inning but Cowgirl starter
Lindsay Davis helped her cause by getting a line drive out back to her to end the top half of the inning without allowing Sam Houston to score.
Davis improved to 6-5 on the year with the win, allowing two runs on seven hits, three walks and one strikeout.
Shaelyn Sanders picked up her first save of the year in relief. Sanders faced eight batters, struck out five, and allowed one hit.
Mundine picked up two of the five Cowgirl hits while Dibbley accounted for two of the four RBI.
McNeese will return to Southland Conference play this weekend to host Houston Christian in a three-game series beginning with a single game Friday at 6 p.m.
