SAN ANTONIO, Texas—McNeese women's tennis record setting season came to an end Sunday at the Southland Conference Championship with a 4-2 loss in the championship match to regular season champion Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, ending the Cowgirls' season with a 20-4 record. The Islanders will represent the SLC in the NCAA Tournament.
Despite the loss, McNeese handed the Islanders their only individual match losses in tournament play. The Islanders entered Sunday's match having won their previous two matches by the score of 4-0.
The Cowgirls opened the championship match by winning the doubles point where
Anastasija Adeikyte and Arina Gameretkaia defeated Emma Aucagne and Naomi Moi McKenzie 6-1 at flight 1 then
Aina Domingo-Bernabeu and
Tiana Fox sealed the doubles point with their 6-2, flight 3 win over Valeria Cherfus and Kateryna Rublevska.
The Islanders picked up the first three singles points to take a 3-1 lead. Gamretkaia defeated Aucagne in three sets at flight 1 to pull McNeese to within one, 3-2.
Ana Veroux clinched the overall match for TAMU-CC with her 6-4, 7-4 (8-6) win over Adeikyte at flight 3.
The doubles team of Gamretkaia and Adeikyte were named to the all-tournament team. Gamretkaia and
Tiana Fox were also named to the singles all-tournament team.
The Islanders improve to 23-2 overall with the win.
