LAKE CHARLES—For the second time this season, McNeese and #19 UL-Lafayette battled to a one run game and for the second time the Cajuns were victorious following a 5-4 win Wednesday night at Joe Miller field at Cowgirl Diamond.
McNeese (33-16) took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning by scoring a run in the first inning on an
Alexis Dibbley two out single that scored
Corine Poncho who reached on a walk.
One inning later, the Cowgirls took the 3-0 lead by scoring two runs on three hits including RBI singles by
Mariana Torres and
Samantha Mundine.
The Cajuns (35-15) tied the game in the third by scoring three runs, two of which were aided by two Cowgirl errors in the inning.
UL-Lafayette took the lead, 4-3 in the fifth inning on a two out RBU by Brooke Ellestad then extended the lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning on a leadoff homerun by Sam Roe.
The seventh inning got a little interesting as the Cajuns used the flex position to their advantage by switching pitchers Sam Landry and Chloe Riassetto and designated player Laney Credeur before the Cajuns settled on Riassetto in the circle for the final two outs of the game.
Cowgirls pulled to within one run with one out and the bases loaded when Dibbley hit a grounder to short, but the Cajuns' second baseman mishandled the ball allowing Bouvier to score.
After all the Cajuns switching players positions and the Cowgirls having the bases loaded with two outs, Riassetto got
Bella Perez and
Crislyne Moreno to go down swinging to end the game.
Torres and
Reese Reyna led the Cowgirls on the night with two hits apiece and Reyna picking up the only McNeese extra base hit with a double in the second inning.
Sanders falls to 16-8 on the year with the complete game loss.
Roe led the Cajuns with three hits including two extra base hits, her homerun in the sixth and a double in the seventh.
Landry improved to 18-7 overall with the win and Riassetto picked up her sixth save of the year.
McNeese will return to its Southland Conference schedule this weekend with a three-game series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi beginning with a doubleheader at noon Friday.
