LAKE CHARLES—McNeese softball completed the Southland Conference series sweep over Lamar Saturday with a 6-2, 6-3 doubleheader win to improve to 26-15 overall and 11-1 in league play. With the losses, Lamar falls to 23-16 overall and 9-6 in the SLC.
McNeese outhit the Cardinals 17-10 on the day and for the second day took advantage of four Lamar errors to pick up the wins.
In the opening game, McNeese took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two RBI double by
Bella Perez who ended the day going 3 for 6.
Lamar tied the game at two all with single runs in the third and fourth innings including a game tying solo homerun by Trinity Brandon.
McNeese responded with four runs on three hits and took advantage of two Lamar error to lead 6-2. That would be all the run support starting pitcher
Alexis Dibbley needed. Dibbley tossed 6.0 innings and picked up the win to improve to 3-1 overall.
Lindsay Davis relieved Dibbley in the seventh inning and faced four batters, picking up one strikeout.
In the nightcap, McNeese once again took the early lead with a single run in the first inning on a
Samantha Mundine double to left center that scored
Corine Poncho.
Brandon put the Cardinals up 3-1 in the fourth inning on a three-run homerun, her second homerun of the day.
Two runs by the Cowgirls in the fourth inning on a bases loaded walk by
Mariana Torres cut the lead to 3-2 then Poncho was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded tied the game at three all.
McNeese broke the tie with three runs on four hits in the sixth inning when the first three Cowgirl batters reached on base hit singles to load the bases.
Davis picked up the win in relief of starter
Ryann Schexnayder. Schexnayder gave up three runs on two hits in 4.0 inning while Davis tossed three shutout innings, allowing only two hits to improve to 5-5 on the year.
McNeese will take a little break and will return to action next weekend when they travel to Commerce, Texas to face Texas A&M-Commerce in a three-game series beginning with a double header on Friday, April 12.
